In what ways can subversion develop creativity in relation to practise?

The use of subversive messages in creative practice doesn’t subvert creativity itself. It is how you use the messages. For example, if you use subversive methods to discuss your message, like adjusters, or you experiment with the way the audience receives the message, like Peter Dunn, you can develop creativity in practice through the enhancement of creative thinking and problem solving.

With regards to subversive practitioners, experimenting with interesting design methods and different materials expands your skillset allowing creativity to develop. Playing with composition, typography and blurring the lines of function vs form gives you new ways you can present ideas expanding your knowledge of design practice.

For me, subverting your working environment resulted in positive changes in practice and productivity which will develop creativity.

Subversive methods of working have allowed me to experiment with other ways design outcomes can be achieved and heightened my curiosity when it comes to being more playful with my work.

I would argue subversion within creative practice does develop creativity however there will be many other practice methods that can do this as well as anything the expands skillset and knowledge will aid in creativity.

I have included the conclusion of my presentation above. This is what I have concluded the answer to my given question to be. With regards to my thoughts on the project in general, I would have liked to have utilised this blog more. Towards the end of the project, when I began to post the research missing and fill in any gaps, I really enjoyed using the blog as a method of reflecting on what I had researched and collating my ideas.

When designing my presentation having this space to refer back to was really useful. I also think my time management could have been better at the beginning of the project. It would have been good for me to delve right in early on and I think I would have developed a better understanding of the question before conducting further research if I had done this. This also would have allowed me to test more things out within my practice.

I am glad this was the question on worked on as it has meant that I have made changes within my working practices that I can take with in my MA and hopefully will allow me to continue to develop my creativity.

A key thing I learnt from this project is not to overthink and get too caught up on one idea. In a book written by Craig Oldman (2018) he says how you should never fall in love with an idea and I understand that now. I got to wrapped up early on on the meaning of subversion and over analysing what the best way to test whether creativity is developed from it. I should have just been getting stuck in! In future I will attempt not to focus on one plan and one way forward because it will not be the only way an outcome can be achieved.
