Over the last month or 2, I have begun preparation for my contextual report. I have not posted about this work as it is a work in progress and is in a written format rather than visual design work. However, I decided to get back into my visual experimentation by conducting a brainstorm. I have a variety of different ideas that could be explored, but I wanted to break down the pros and cons of creating work in these areas to refine the ideas to a few potential avenues.

Looking through the content and research I have created and conducted so far, a few areas explored within visual experimentation could attain which options could be viable outcomes. In a previous prototyping session and presenting the illustrations I had created, I also introduced the wireframes I began to test how the project could work on different platforms. The wireframes consist of;

Newsletter (Digital)

Newsletter (Printed)

Website

Editorial Spread

Initially, I could begin by placing some of my content within these wireframes to test how they work. I have written three questions to consider while doing this;

  1. How does this work with my content? Is the message clear?

  2. Does it work? Will I achieve the desired outcome with this medium?

  3. How would this product be advertised to my target audience, and would they respond well to it?

Next, I separated my new ideas (that would not be utilising the previously designed wireframes) into 2 sections. This consisted of Digital Content and Printed Content.

Digital Content

  1. Video Series

  2. Website

  3. Newsletter

  4. App (Database of film and content)

Printed Content

  1. Book

  2. Subscription magazine or publication

  3. Information/Activity Pack

Once I had a set of ideas, I created a visual outcome mind map to consider which areas to experiment with. I covered four digital ideas; web design, newsletter, application, and video series. I have thought maybe experimenting with web design and the newsletter idea from weighing up the pros and cons. However, I need to be adventurous and try new things in both cases as both outcomes are potentially overused, and I would not want to bore the user with a dull format.

As for the print ideas, I think book, magazine and info/activity pack could all be areas to explore and experiment with. However, I think the most important thing at this stage in the project is to begin quick experimentations, getting all ideas one paper to test as much as possible before refining anything towards the final outcome. I think this will also help as a method of changing up my practice. I have been working along a linear path at this stage, and I want to branch out and follow a more circular way of working to move towards iterative practice methods.

For initial inspiration, a quick pinterest board was created covering loads of different avenues for different ideas. This board can be accessed via the link below.
